Giovanni Mpetshi Piccard did not expect to be playing at Wimbledon this Saturday. He lost in the qualifying rounds but was reinstated as a lucky loser. Now he faces unseeded Emil Ruusuvouri in the third round. For the victor, there’s a match in the last 16 against either 26th seed Lorenzo Musetti or unseeded Francesco Comesana.

Pirricard was beaten by Maxime Janvier in the final qualifying round. Then he was put back into the tournament and he’s making his Grand Slam main draw debut. He made the most of it because in round one he beat the 20th seed Sebastian Korda in five sets.

That was a match in which four tie-breaks were played. It was smoother in round two as he beat Yoshihito Nishioka in straight sets, losing only seven games. So far in five matches in this tournament, he’s played eight tie-breaks.

Earlier in June he played a match in Stuttgart that had three tie-breaks. His run to this third round has taken him up to 51st in the live rankings, 19 places above his opponent. In the ATP Race, Perricard is up to 36th position, 18 higher than Russuvouri.

Emil Ruusuvouri is in the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time. Before this year, he’d won just one match in three visits to Wimbledon. He played two grass court warm-up events, and his best was a last 16 in Eastbourne.

That included a win over Cameron Norrie which looks a pretty good result now.Round one saw him have to win the final two sets to beat Mackenzie McDonald. Then in round two, he caused a shock with a win over Stefanos Tsitsipas. 

We go for Perricard to win this match but both players to win a set.
