At the group stage in this competition, Germany was the best performer, the only nation to win all three matches. France secured their place in the knockouts courtesy of a draw and two wins.
At the quarterfinals, meeting Italy, the two nations served up a spectacle, playing out a five-goal thriller that spilled into extra time with two red cards. Nick Woltemade, Nelson Weiper, and Merlin Rohl scored for Germany to complete their 3-2 win.
