The play-off round of the Champions League qualifiers is upon us and Gent host Dynamo Kiev in the first leg of an eye-catching tie. The game will kick off at the Ghelamco Arena with Gent hoping that their shaky domestic form doesn't creep into their European performances. They finished second in the Belgian top flight last season but four defeats in their opening six matches have left them 13th in the table. Dynamo Kiev also finished second in the Ukrainian Premier League last season, something that can be deduced from how they've started the new campaign. Unbeaten after three matches, two wins put them third in the table. Dynamo's superb start extends beyond league fixtures with a victory over Shakhtar Donetsk in the Super Cup coupled with a European triumph over AZ Alkmaar. They hope this can be the prologue for a Champions League adventure. Having crashed out at the play-off round in two of the last three seasons, Dynamo are hungry for a first UCL campaign since 2016-17, when they reached the Round of 16. Gent have had a longer UCL wait, their last participation in the competition being 2015-16, when they also made the last 16.

Gent and Dynamo have met before. The 2010-11 season of the Champions League pitted the teams against one another in the third qualifying round. Dynamo won the home leg 3-0 before going to Belgian and sealing their qualification with a 3-1 victory for a 6-1 overall aggregate progression. Both teams participated in the Europa League last season with Gent narrowly exiting at the hands of Roma in the Round of 32 and Dynamo failing to make it out of the group.
