Gael Monfils vs Dominic Thiem Prediction & Betting Tips - ATP Mallorca Open

Sixth seed Gael Monfils takes on wild card Dominic Them for a place in round two of the Mallorca Open. Whoever wins this match will be up against unseeded Spanish opposition, either Roberto Carballes Baena or wild card Pablo Carreno Busta. Monfils is 40th in the last ranking list and this is his first grass court tournament of the year. He hasn't played since being beaten in the second round at Roland Garros. The 38-year-old first played Wimbledon 19 years ago but his best run has been reaching round four in 2018 and hasn't played there since 2021. The grass court Grand Slam remains the only one in which he has failed to get to at least the last eight. This is the first time the Frenchman has played in a grass court tournament since 2021 and lost three of his four matches that year.

Dominic Thiem is coming to the end of his career. The former world number  has seen his career blighted by injury and it's time to call it a day this year. He has played Monfils on six previous occasions and won every one of their matches. They haven't played each other since 20220 and this is the first time they've had a match on grass.  The last world ranking list had Thiem at 134th and like Monfils, this is his first taste of grass court tennis in 2024. Even on his preferred clay he's found it hard to recapture his glory days with only four out of 11 matches won. On grass, the Austrian reached round four at Wimbledon seven years ago but apart from that has only won two out of eight matches there with no wins in the last seven years. He last won on grass in  and three years ago had to retire in his first match in this tournament and last won on this surface six years ago. We tip Monfils to win this match.
