France made a winning start to their 2026 World Cup campaign when they beat Senegal 3-1 on Tuesday. Les Bleus are second in Group I and bid to make it two wins out of two when they take on Iraq in Philadelphia. Iraq conceded four in their opening game and will now have to cope with this star-studded French attack. As a result, our prediction favours a high-scoring success for the 2018 champions.
Group I looks as if it is building up to a showdown between France and Norway to decide who will finish in top spot. Kylian Mbappé was in top form on Tuesday and he will certainly fancy his chances of extending his record as top scorer for France in this competition. France will be confident of securing three points from this second fixture in the group.
Iraq are playing in the World Cup finals for only the second time in their history. The only other time the Lions of Mesopotamia qualified was 40 years ago and they lost all three of their group games. This tournament began with a 4-1 loss to Norway and life isn't going to get any easier for them here.

France - Iraq: Form Analysis
It took France until the 66th minute to break the deadlock against Senegal in their opening World Cup fixture. Once Kylian Mbappé gave them the lead, there was no looking back and Les Bleus went on to win the game 3-1. Two of the goals in that game came in added on time in the second half.
France will want go one better than the runner-up spot they achieved in the 2022 tournament. They last lifted the trophy in 2018 and it was 2010 when France last failed to reach at least the quarter-finals of the World Cup.
Their qualifying group was won by six points with five wins and an away draw in Iceland. The win over Senegal means that they have only lost one of their last 12 internationals. That was a 2-1 loss to Ivory Coast earlier this month. Ten of those 12 games have been won.
Iraq have it all to do if they want to reach the knockout stages for the first time.
Iraq were beaten 4-1 by Norway in their opening game. It was 1-1 at one stage but they struggled to cope with Erling Haaland who scored twice. That extended their winless run to three matches. Finishing third in the group could see Iraq qualify, but losing their first game by such a heavy margin is not going to help them at all.
Their last win was a 1-0 victory over Andorra at the end of May. Iraq had to go through the Inter Confederation play-offs to reach their first World Cup finals in 40 years, where they beat Bolivia 2-1.

France will ensure they qualify for the knockout stages if they can beat Iraq. After this match they take on Norway in their final game in Group I and will be totally confident of having six points in the bag as they go into that game.
The French squad does have a few injury problems at pesent mainly at the back. It is expected though that William Saliba and Malo Gusto will be fit to take their place in the team for this match. However it is expected that Lucas Digne will come into the starting line-up to replace Theo Hernandez. Other changes could see Kone and Barcola start the match.

Kylian Mbappe scored twice in their win over Senegal to become France's all-time leading goalscorer. This also moved him up to fourth in the all-time World Cup scoring record ranks. He's now only two behind the current record, held by Miroslav Klose and his former team mate at PSG, Lionel Messi.
As for Iraq, Ali Jasim had to come off in the second half of the game against Norway. He has been training though and is likely to play against France. There have also been concerns about goalkeeper Jalal Hassan but will he play even if fit? He wasn't impressive against Norway and may be replaced by Ahmed Basil.
Aymen Hussein was on target for them in the game against Norway but also scored an own goal earlier in the game. He has now scored 34 goals for his national side and this will be his 97th international. The goal against Norway was his first since he hit the winner in their Inter-Confederation play-off match against Bolivia.
