Inter Milan face off against Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League quarter-finals on Monday night. The game will be a single-legged tie and it will be played at a neutral venue in Germany, as will the rest of the remaining games of this competition. Inter made it to this stage after comfortably beating Getafe 2-0 in the Round of 16. As the first leg of that tie had not been played when the competition was brought to a halt by lockdown, it was also played as a single-legged affair in Germany. Inter had started the season in the Champions League but parachuted into the Europa League after finishing third in their UCL group. They kicked off their UEL campaign with a 4-1 aggregate win over Ludogorets in the Round of 32. Leverkusen also started the season off in the UCL before a third-placed finish in a group featuring Juventus and Atletico Madrid led them to the UEL. They followed up an impressive 5-2 aggregate victory over Porto in the Round of 32 with a 4-1 aggregate pasting of Rangers in the Round of 16.
Domestically, Inter are coming off the back of a Serie A campaign in which they finished second to Juventus. A look at the table suggests that it was a close-fought race as Juventus only finished a point clear of the Nerazzurri, but, in truth, Juventus were able to retain their title with relative ease and rounds to spare. Antonio Conte has been critical of Inter's board and it has fuelled speculation that he could leave the club. Romelu Lukaku is Inter's star man, scoring 30 goals in all competitions thus far, including five in seven European appearances. Leverkusen narrowly missed out on UCL qualification by finishing fifth in the Bundesliga so they may be more motivated than their Italian opponents to triumph. Kai Havertz, linked with a big-money move to Chelsea, has been the undisputed star of Leverkusen's season and one of the best-performing players of the UEL knockout stages. He has scored three goals and created two more in his four UEL appearances. Although Inter haven't conceded in their last five games in all competitions, the unusual setting of this game and a player of Havertz's quality could breach their defence. Back both teams to score.
