Everton welcome Tottenham to Goodison Park on Sunday afternoon, as they look to regain the winning thread (in the league) after last weekend’s agonising defeat against Brighton. Spurs will also be hoping to bounce back after they were beaten by the Toffees’ local rivals a week ago. They are currently 11th in the league. It’s been a difficult campaign for Everton, who remain in an unflattering league position. They lie in 16th position.That said, things have started to improve of late. For a start, having notched six in their last three league and cup games, they’re now scoring goals, which is something that wasn’t occurring all that long ago. The main problem for the Toffees at present is that they’re not offering enough resistance. Last time out at this venue, they secured a pleasing win over West Ham, scoring two good goals in the process, but if we look at their overall home efforts this term, it’s easy to see that they’ve struggled at the back.

Marco Silva’s men have shipped seven in five at home, while they’ve also tended to concede numerous chances in games. Interestingly, Everton are the seventh-worst team in terms of shots on target conceded at home in Premier League this term. Fortunately, Sunday’s visitors have been none too clever on the road, so there’s plenty of hope for Everton. Tottenham come into this fixture without an away win this term, while like the hosts, they’ve struggled to keep teams at bay. Spurs have conceded a worrying total of 11 goals in just five away matches this season, and it’s not as if they’ve been unlucky either. Mauricio Pochettino’s men have conceded plenty of chances on their travels and have found it tough to stop teams from creating, especially on the break. Not only have Tottenham failed to keep a clean sheet away from home this term, but they’ve also conceded two or more in 100% of their travelling matches. Defensive improvements are required, though recent efforts certainly haven’t suggested that improvements are forthcoming. What Spurs can do is hurt teams going forward. They’ve not always been at their attacking best this term, but they’ve certainly got the tools to do lots of damage, as Everton found out when conceding six goals against Tottenham at this venue last season. At Anfield last weekend, by getting on the score-sheet and creating a few big chances, last season’s Champions League finalists showed that they’ve still got what it takes to do the business in the final third, which bodes well ahead of a match against an Everton side lacking in defensive solidity.
