The pressure is on England going into this game. Much of the talk about the Young Lions will center on comparisons with the title-winning 2023 team and the seamless run to the title.
Though strong, this current side doesn't have the balance and coordination of the 2023 side. That imbalance was noted in the lack of attacking finesse in the last game.
Player withdrawals in favor of the Club World Cup didn’t help either. England’s 3-1 win over the Czech Republic in the opener placed them on the right footing, but a 0-0 draw with Slovenia left a lot of questions.
Germany are unbeaten in 17 matches since losing to England in June 2023.
Some of those questions could be answered on Wednesday when they take on Germany, who are playing for the top spot. Unlike England, Germany will play with reduced pressure.
They made no mistake, with two wins in the opening two matches to leap up the group summit. It has been a massive improvement from their poor showing in the last edition.
Germany started their campaign with a 3-0 thumping of Slovenia before seeing off the Czech Republic 4-2. That win handed them their 17th unbeaten outing, yet it is England U21 who last beat them.

From their last performance, there’s no doubt when the Young Lions need to strengthen. England managed just three shots on target in the last game despite attempting 20 shots. This will form the basis for the call to start the game with a recognized forward.
With this being a game they can’t afford to lose, Lee Carsley might be forced to start with Jay Stansfield as his target man. But what does Stansfield offer?
