The final match of the opening week in the 2024 Currie Cup will see Western Province taking on the Blue Bulls at Cape Town Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The hosts finished in fourth place last season, while the visitors finished fifth.
All told, 2023 was a bit of a mixed season for Western Province. They failed to qualify for the knockout rounds in the Currie Cup but were somewhat better in Europe.
At the United Rugby Championship, the franchise Stormers were knocked out in the quarter-final by the Glasgow Warriors, while in the Champions Cup, they reached the post-season but came up agonisingly short to La Rochelle.
At home, Province won four of their seven home games last season, one of which was a 31-7 victory over this opponent.
Meanwhile, the Bulls snuck into the semi-final of this competition last season, albeit by just a single point. However, they were up against the eventual winners Free State Cheetahs on the road and were somewhat easily beaten 39-10.
The URC proved to be the highlight of the Bulls' season, as they finished second in the group stage and overcame both Ulster and Leinster in the quarter and semi-finals. Unfortunately, they came up just short against the Warriors, losing 21-16 in the final.
Bulls won three of their seven away games last season, and while they lost at this venue last season, they did win on their two preceding visits.
