Second seed Ben Shelton will take on wildcard Denis Shapovalov in the Washington Open quarter-finals. This is the second time Shelton and Shapovalov are squaring off this year and below is our preview and prediction for this match.

Denis Shapovalov had to come from a set down to defeat Miomir Kecmanovic in three sets in the last round. This was his sixth win on hard courts this year and improved his record to 17-18. The Canadian hasn’t been consistent this year, battling with fitness concerns after an injury-riddled 2023 season.

Advancing to his first tour quarter-final of the season has bumped the 25-year-old up 33 places in the live ranking. He is currently placed 106th.

Ben Shelton defeated Shapovalov in their first career meeting last month at the Wimbledon Championships. It was not an easy win for the American as that third-round showdown went all the way to the fifth set.

As he is a better player on hard courts than he is on grass, Shelton will be confident of a smooth run here. Shelton, who lost in the second round in DC on his debut last season, defeated Brandon Nakashima in the second round.

He won in straight sets against his fellow American but was forced into a tiebreaker in both sets. This was his 25th win of the season and 11th on hard courts. The current world number 14 has had his two best performances this year in his native USA. He won the title in Houston and then had a semi-final finish in Dallas. 

The winner here will play Flavio Cobolli or Alex Michelsen for a place in the semi-finals.
