DC United lost their most recent Eastern Conference game 3-1 at Atlanta United despite Wayne Rooney making his first start. Two games for Rooney have seen no goals and one assist but he needs a few more than that to get his new club off the bottom of the table. They are five points adrift but have at least four games in hand on the clubs above them. Out of 16 league games this season, 13 have been played away and the three at home have produced two wins and a draw.  DC United have one win in their last seven games and badly need a confidence boosting victory from this match.

New York Red Bulls are third in the Eastern Conference but if they win their games in hand will go top of the table. Their nine away league games have seen them earn 13 points with four wins, a draw and four losses but they did win away at league leaders Atlanta United who beat DC United in their last game. They have won four of their last five games and with DC United still struggling, they can get an important away win in this match.
