DC United welcomes Charlotte FC to the Audi Field in this opening round encounter of the MLS. The home team had a disappointing campaign last season and fell agonizingly short of the playoffs. In the end it was only one point separating them from the playoffs. It was the second consecutive season that DC United have failed to make the playoffs. They will be confident coming into this match as they went unbeaten in their pre-season friendlies, winning two and drawing two of the four matches. Last season they had the third best home record in the league losing only five times all season. DC United replaced their long serving coach Ben Olsen late last season with Argentinian Hernan Losada and during the pre-season it was evident that they will be playing a more attacking brand of football.
Charlotte FC is the new team added to the MLS roster and they will be facing a baptism of fire in their first match. Charlotte FC was supposed to join the MLS in 2021 but had their debut delayed by the Covid 19 pandemic. They have not had the ideal preparations coming into their opening match having failed to win any of their preseason matches, drawing one and losing three. In their last match they lost to Inter Miami 2-1 so their confidence will be low at the start of the proper season. They will be looking for their goals to come from Karol Swiderski, who has joined the club from Greek Super League side PAOK.
