Fifth seed Daniil Medvedev and Alejandro Fokina (23rd seed) will for the third time in their careers and the second time this season in this Indian Wells quarter final.. Medvedev has won the previous two matches between the two and is the favourite to progress here and set up a semifinal showdown with either 10th-seed Cameron Norrie or 14th-seed Frances Tiafoe. Daniil Medvedev’s current 17-match winning streak started with the three sets victory over Fokina in the second round of the Rotterdam Open. The Russian was forced to come back from a set down against Fokina (4-6, 6-2, 6-2) and set up the win that would put him on the path to winning his next three tournaments (Rotterdam, Doha and Dubai). The world number six has however stuttered in his last two matches where he has dropped a set in each. He was forced to play seven games in each of his three sets against Alexander Zverev in the fourth round and could possibly feel the pinch here with that match lasting more than three hours.

Alejandro Fokina started Medvedev’s purple patch and now has the chance to end it. He has performed considerably better than the former world number one at Indian Wells as he has won two of his three matches by straight sets. He defeated 13th seed Karen Khachanov in three sets (losing the middle set) and will feel even more confident with his overall performance. He has however not progressed past the quarterfinals in his five tournaments this season and this could be an impediment, especially coming up against a player playing at a considerably higher level.
