World No. 63 Daniel Merida Aguilar faces his toughest test of the 2026 Montreal Open when he locks horns with 19th-ranked Learner Tien in the quarterfinals on Tuesday. Sitting 44 places above Daniel Merida in the rankings, Tien is a clear favourite here, having won each of his three matches in the competition, all against lower-ranked opposition. Hence, our prediction backing him to secure victory. 

After a shock Round-of-32 exit to World No. 121 Kyrian Jacquet in the Estoril Open in July, Daniel Merida Aguilar turned the corner with a largely unexpected deep run in the 2026 Montreal Open. The 21-year-old saw off Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor, ranked 69th in the world, in straight sets, winning 6–3, 6–1 in Round 16. 

However, his impressive run in the competition will be put to the test on Tuesday. The Spaniard has suffered defeat in both of his previous matches against opponents in the top 20. The most recent came in a 3–1 defeat to sixth-ranked Daniil Medvedev in the second round of Wimbledon.

Learner Tien opened his 2026 Montreal Open campaign, defeating France’s Gael Monfils in three sets. This was followed by straight-set victories over World No. 21 Tommy Paul in Round 32 and 65th-ranked Argentine Thiago Agustin Tirante (6–4, 6–4) in Round 16 on Sunday.

Sunday's result saw the American No. 3 and two-time ATP champion rack up five wins in seven matches against lower-ranked opponents on hard courts.
