Unseeded pair Daniel Evans and Lorenzo Sonego face each other in the Australian Open first round.  A tough match possibly lies ahead in round two with the winner up against either second seed Carlos Alcaraz or unseeded Richard Gasquet. Evans is 38th in the live rankings but has been as high as 21st in August of last year. The 33-year-old has reached the fourth round of this hard court Grand Slam in the past but it was seven years ago. Last year saw the British player get to the third round of this tournament and the US Open but suffer first round losses at Roland Garros and Wimbledon. So far in 2024, Evans has played the Adelaide International and lost in round two to Alexander Bublik.

Lorenzo Sonego is in 46th place in the live rankings and has won both of his two previous matches against Evans. They were both played on hard courts and the most recent saw Sonego win in Miami last year. The Italian played in the United Cup at the start of this year and lost both of his singles matches against Adrian Mannarino and Alexander Zverev. He then got to the second round in Adelaide being beaten by Sebastian Korda. Sonego made it to the third round here in 2022 but only round two last year.
