Crystal Palace will be back at home on Match Day 9 to host embattled Newcastle United, the two sides fighting different battles. Hosts Palace go to the game placed 14th with eight points and Newcastle are 19th with three points. Palace are coming from a 2-2 draw with Arsenal, a game they feel they should have won. Conceding in stoppage time confined them to a fourth straight winless game, three of them straight draws. Three times in the last four matches, Palace have conceded in the final five minutes, and twice, this has denied them victory. They aren’t doing so well defensively, keeping just two clean sheets in the nine matches they’ve played this season. Their best chance at winning is at home, as seen in their four league matches so far. They are unbeaten in their four home games in the league, drawing three, keeping two clan sheets and scoring in the last three.

Newcastle United is a club in transition and the new ownership so far hasn’t stabilised things. On Wednesday manager Steve Bruce was sacked and Graeme Jones handed temporary charge. Jones will be looking to deliver Newcastle’s first win in the league this season. They’ve lost each of the last two matches and three of the last five while having zero clean sheets so far says all about the defence. Indeed, Newcastle have conceded the most goals in the league this season (19). Their scoring run isn’t so bad and maybe they can shock Palace – both teams have scored in Newcastle’s last six matches. In two of their last three league games, they took the lead but dropped points; most recently, this happened against Tottenham Hotspur as they lost 3-2. That game also saw Jonjo Shelvey sent off and he will be suspended for this one. The Magpies’ away run hasn’t been great either; in the four league games on the road, they are winless, with three defeats. They’ve conceded two or more goals in three of the four losses and failed to score in one.
