Third seed Cori Gauff will take on qualifier Tamara Zidansek in the second round of this year’s French Open. This is the first time the two are competing against each other and the winner will play Wang Yafan or Dayana Yastremska next. Cori Gauff has qualified for the second week of competition in her last three appearances here. Two seasons ago she produced her best-ever result at a Grand Slam at the time by finishing as runner-up. Last year she fell in the quarter-finals. Gauff is having an amazing season and out of 34 matches, has won 26 times. Eight of her wins have come on clay. This strong showing has produced one title in Auckland and multiple semi-finals at the major and WTA 1000 levels. The reigning US Open champion began her campaign here with a straight-sets victory against the qualifier Julia Avdeeva. She relinquished just two games in the contest and secured the win in under one hour. The world number three is ranked fifth in the singles race.

Tamara Zidansek is back in the main draw at Roland Garros for a sixth successive season. The Slovenian is a former French Open semi-finalist. She achieved this feat in 2021 and it remains to be her best-ever result at a major. Zidansek had a torrid start to the year and managed just two wins in her first 11 fixtures. She found her form as the season switched to clay and has now compiled an 8-10 record. Seven of her victories have come on clay with six being registered in the last seven outings. The 26-year-old, who is now up 10 places to 121st in the live ranking, has won her last four matches. After progressing from the qualifying rounds, Zidansek, who has won over 200 matches on clay, defeated Alison Van Uytvanck in the first round. She won in three sets with the match lasting two hours.
