Third seed Cori Gauff's Madrid Open campaign continues on Saturday, with a game against 31st seed Dayana Yastremska. They will square off in the third round with the winner setting up a showdown with either Madison Keys or Liudmila Samsonova. Gauff has never advanced past the third round in Madrid. The American has in the last two seasons exited the competition in this very round. This is therefore not just another tie and she will be eager to avoid another similar fate. Gauff, who is having another strong season, was in excellent form in her tournament opener. She took just 51 minutes to defeat Arantxa Rus without dropping a single game. The win improved her record to 20-6 and was her second victory in three clay matches. She has now moved up to second in the live ranking for the first time in her career. Gauff has claimed one title this season and has made two semi-final appearances in Melbourne and Indiana Wells.

Dayana Yastremska started the season exceptionally well and won 10 of her first 12 matches. This resulted in a run to the semi-finals at the Australian Open. She has however not been able to hit those highs again. The Ukrainian has lost six times in her last 10 matches. She snapped a two-game skid by defeating the qualifier Emiliana Arango in three sets in the second round. The match lasted for two hours and 33 minutes and saw Yastremska come from behind to win. She had lost the first set 6-0. Now with a 14-8 record, the 23-year-old has moved up one place to 33rd in the live ranking. Yastremska is playing in the third round in Madrid for the first time.
