Congo had a losing start in their African Nations Championships (CHAN) opener against Congo DR in Group B of the tournament in Cameroon. They will be hoping to get to winning ways when they take on Niger in the second game. The 1-0 loss to Congo DR left Congo at the bottom of the group while Niger have one point from their opening 0-0 draw with Libya. Congo are making their second straight appearance and third in total, at the CHAN finals. In the last edition, they reached the quarter final stage and will be hoping to do better this time. Congo however, head here with just two wins in their last 13 internationals. They have struggled, even with foreign based players and will find it tough here, having to only field players in the Congolese league. In the last five international matches, Congo haven’t scored in four. They have one win in the last five CHAN matches, and have scored more than one goal in just one of the five. They have also conceded more than one goal in just one of the last 11 CHAN matches and kept seven clan sheets in 13.
Niger have not enjoyed much success at the international stage in their recent matches. The last 10 have yielded six defeats and two wins and they have failed to score in six as well. They played to a 0-0 draw with group favorites Libya. Niger and Congo are the underdogs in this group, playing against teams with three CHAN titles between them. They missed the last tournament but this is their third appearance at the competition; in their first, Niger progressed to the quarterfinals. They dropped out at the group stages in the second and after a draw in the opening game, they will be going all out for a win here. They beat Ivory Coast to secure this slot but have failed to score in four of their last six CHAN matches. Niger haven’t conceded more than one goal in their last five CHAN matches but have managed just two wins in their last 12 matches.

Congo and Niger are the weaker teams in this group, in terms of success in CHAN competitions. Niger will be at an advantage having drawn their opening game, since both sides need three points here. One thing to expect here is a very defensive approach as both sides try to secure what they already have rather than go all out. The two nations haven’t conceded a lot of goals in previous CHAN engagements and going for under 2.5 goals here looks good, though a draw is very likely.
