Chelsea’s fortunes have dwindled in the recent matches and they will be hosting Southampton, with the hope of getting back to winning ways. The Blues have 13 points, in third place while Southampton are 16th with four points. Chelsea had a flying start to the campaign, but their last three matches have served no wins, with the team coming from two straight losses and a draw. They also have no clean sheet in the three matches, and have failed to score in the last two – defeats to Manchester City and Juventus. Four of their last five matches have produced under 2.5 goals and they’ve managed to score more than a goal in just one of their last five matches. Three of their last five league games have seen under 2.5 goals scored and they go to this game with just one win in five meetings with Southampton. Chelsea are grappling with injuries and absences ahead of this game – N’golo Kante tested positive for covid and is absent while Christian Pulisic and Reece James are nursing ankle injuries.

Southampton are also heading to this game on the back of defeat, having fallen 1-0 at home to Wolves in the last game. While they have registered draws with Manchester United, Manchester City and West Ham, they remain winless in the league this season. Their only positive is having a better defensive output than all the other teams in the bottom six. The Saints have only conceded seven goals, which is way better than most teams above them in the standings. In the last five matches they have no outright win, just four draws and a defeat; their run this season means they are currently placed just a point above the drop zone, being one of five teams yet to win in the league. The Saints’ only win this season came against Newport County in the League Cup, and it happens that the clean sheet there is one of their three so far. Both teams have scored in four of Southampton’s eight this season but they have failed to score in three of their last five, the three ending in under 2.5 goals. Against Chelsea, Southampton are unbeaten in their last three meetings, winning one and drawing two.
