Both of these clubs made poor starts to their Champions League campaigns. Chelsea lost at home to Valencia and Liverpool lost away at Napoli for the second season in a row. Now they return to Premier League action and going into the weekend, Liverpool are five points clear at the top of the table. All five of their league games have been won this season with 15 league goals scored. A win over Chelsea will put ten points between the two clubs. Liverpool may have scored a lot of league goals but only away at Burnley have they kept a clean sheet. They also conceded in the Community Shield, European Super Cup (against Chelsea) and Champions League.

Chelsea would have expected to get points at home to Valencia in midweek. Instead, they lost 1-0 thanks to a late penalty being missed. There have been some bright moments for them this season and they begin the weekend in sixth place in the Premier League, only out of the top four on goal difference. Tammy Abraham is in top form but Chelsea have conceded 11 goals in the league this season plus another three in other competitions. Only Norwich City (who put two past them) have conceded more goals than Chelsea in the Premier League this season. A bet on both teams to score in this game looks a winner.
