Group B at the 2026 IIHF World Championship kicks off with Canada taking on Sweden on Friday. Team Canada (4th seed) have won their last two games against the Three Crowns (5th), and our prediction is that the North American team will win this match as well.
Canada are the most successful nation in this competition with 28 gold medals, but they have not won the title since 2023. They were eliminated in the quarter-finals in the last edition.
Team Canada suffered disappointment in the Olympics earlier this year, losing to the USA in the final. However, that is the only defeat they have suffered in their last seven matches.
Jon Cooper’s side defeated France 6-1 in their warm-up match over the weekend. Macklin Celebrini could be one to watch for the Canadians against Sweden’s structured defence.
Meanwhile, Sweden are one of the most consistent teams in international hockey. They last won the World Championship in 2018, but did take home bronze in the last two editions.
Tre Kronor lost their last match 5-1 to Finland in the Beijer Hockey Games last weekend and exited the Olympic Games in the quarter-final stage against the USA earlier this year.
Sam Hallam’s team have one of the deepest two-way lineups in the competition and are renowned for their disciplined defensive structure and puck possession.

Our Canada vs Sweden Prediction
After suffering disappointment at the Olympic Games and failing to secure a medal in this competition last year, Canada will be determined to do better this time around, and this is a perfect opportunity to put down an early marker.
Sweden will certainly not make it easy for them, though, as their defensive structure is tough to break down. However, the Three Crowns have lost their last two games against this opponent, and we feel they will suffer defeat in this one as well. Our Canada vs Sweden prediction is Canada wins.
