River Plate host Gimnasia for the ninth round of the Argentinian Liga Professional, in an intriguing match up between two teams who have their own reasons to push for the win. Marcelo Gallardo’s River are arguably in their toughest spot since several years, with the team being out of the Copa Libertadores and far behind in the league. While they showed signs of recovery when they resoundingly beat Barracas for the Cup, they faltered again last time out, holding a precious lead and revenge against Velez who also eliminated them a week ago, only to concede in the last minute of added time and settle for a draw. This result leaves them sixteenth in the standings with just nine points from their last eight games, in what is surely one of the team’s worst ever league starts. The team have also had some transfer upheaval in recent days, since after missing out on Luis Suarez and saying goodbye to Julian Alvarez, they also lost key player Fabrizio Angileri who moved to Getafe. River, who have one win in their last six can at least be buoyed by their impressive tradition against Gimnasia, against whom they have not lost in their last twelve at the Monumental. 

Gimnasia are one of the teams who have started the league positively, and are currently sitting in fifth place and just a point away from leaders Godoy, Newells and Atletico Tucuman. However, they have faltered in their last two games, drawing one and losing the other, interrupting a winning streak of four games on the spin. The away outfit have been impressive on the road lately, losing just once and winning four in their last seven. They have also scored in six of those games and have no issue when it comes to the offensive aspect of the game. With regards to the defensive aspect, Gimnasia have conceded just five goals in their eight league games, boasting one of the best defences in the league so far. In fact, they have kept clean sheets in three of their last four games.
