Borussia Dortmund haven’t had their ideal season, but can finish with a trophy as they go for the German Cup. They are set to host Bundesliga 2 side Holstein Kiel in the second semi final of the competition this Saturday. A win here will see them grace the final for the first time since winning the cup in 2017 and with three straight wins ahead of this game, interim boss Edin Terzic will hope to see them extend that. The coach is eyeing silverware and a top four finish in the Bundesliga to sign off his time, so this is a key game. After going a few matches without scoring, Erling Haaland is back in fine form and has scored four in the last three matches. He will be the main man in attack here and with the team having rested for a whole week, with no league engagements again until next weekend, the manager could be tempted to field a strong side. However, with a key league game against Leipzig coming up, and with the possibility of facing Leipzig in the final, leaving key men out could be a good idea. Dortmund have scored eight goals in the last three matches, and conceded just once. In the German Cup, they beat Borussia Monchengladbach 1-0 in the last round and this is expected to be a less challenging outing.

Holstein Kiel are the surprise team in the competition; earlier, in the second round they eliminated holders Bayern Munich on post match penalties. While they’ve done well from that stage on, it is fair to say they’ve met much weaker opposition in this competition. They go to this game on the back of just one win in the last five matches in Bundesliga 2 and are having congested fixtures at the moment, which could work against them. Holstein Kiel have no clean sheet in the last five matches, and away from home, they’ve registered just a win in five. The last time they met Dortmund, was still in this competition, in 2012 February; then they lost 4-0.
