World number 15 Borna Coric will take on 41st-ranked Tomas Martin Etcheverry in the third round of Roland Garros on Saturday. The winner of this match will take on either Alexander Zverev or Frances Tiafoe in the next round. Coric came into Roland Garros following solid performances in Madrid and Rome, where he reached the quarter-final and semi-final, respectively. His record stands at 16-10 overall and 9-4 on the clay. The Croatian will now go up against a third consecutive Argentine opponent after beating Federico Coria and Pedro Cachin in the opening rounds. Coric’s run up to this point has been far from smooth. It took him four sets, including two tiebreaks, to beat Coria, while against Cachin, he had to come from behind to grab a spot in this round. He’s reached the third round here at Roland Garros four times in the past, but has never gotten further. He’ll be hoping that the fifth time is the charm. 

Meanwhile, Etcheverry’s decision to compete at the Bordeaux Challenger event last month seems to have worked out well for him. The Argentine got to the final in that tournament and managed to break back into the top 50 in the world as a result. He is now 24-14 for the year and 20-10 on the clay. Needless to say, by looking at his record, the Argentine relishes the clay. Etcheverry’s opening win came by way of retirement by Jack Draper, who pulled out in the second set through injury. Still fresh in his second match, Etcheverry looked very good against 18th-ranked Alex de Minaur and defied his underdog status to beat the Australian in straight sets. That win laid down a marker for the Argentine as one to keep an eye on, and he will want to keep going by claiming another big scalp in this one.
