Blackpool were the form side in the final weeks of the League One season. They take on Lincoln City in the play-off final with the winner going into the Championship next season. Blackpool finished third in League One, seven points behind the second automatic promotion place. A form guide for the last five league games had them in second place. Their final four league matches of the season were all won with no goals conceded. That run continued into the first leg of their semi-final against Oxford with a 3-0 away win. The second leg ended 3-3 but Blackpool were never in any danger of seeing their lead slip. Two games against Lincoln this season has seen them lose 3-2 at home and draw 2-2 away. They led in both games and were 2-0 up at Lincoln.

Their opponents finished fifth in League One three points behind Blackpool. Lincoln were strong contenders for automatic promotion for most of the season and led the table at one point. They only won three of their last nine away league matches. They still had enough points to get into the play-offs and won the home leg of their semi-final against Sunderland 2-0. The second leg again showed the problems they have on their travels. Lincoln went 2-0 down but a second half goal got them through 3-2 on aggregate.
