Black Leopards’ season is over; they will be playing in the second tier next season, and their final PSL match of the season, at home to Bloemfontein Celtic is just a formality. The 3-1 loss to Cape Town City in the 29th round of matches confirmed their relegation and after a poor season that has delivered just five wins in 29 matches, they have to strategize for the future. Leopards did manage two wins in their last five matches, but losses to Cap Town City, and Orlando Pirates nailed them while failing to beat direct relegation candidates Chippa United didn’t leave them any favors. Their main problem in the season has been in defence, the team conceding the most goals in the league, at 46. Going to this game they have one clean sheet in the last five matches and four of those have produced over 2.5 goals. Their scoring returns have also not been the best; in 29 matches they’ve scored 22.
Bloemfontein Celtic haven’t also had a great season, but they did just enough to avoid the relegation scrap. They may have wished to finish in the top eight but that as well is beyond reach, going to the final game. The 2-0 defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns officially locked them out of the top eight, and the highest they can rise is ninth place even with a win here. With just one win in the last eight matches, it has been a poor run for Celtic, and they’ll be happy to see off a very difficult campaign. They have just one clean sheet in those eight matches and only two have hit over 2.5 goals.
