Besiktas start their title defence in the Turkish Super Lig with a home game against Rizespor this Friday. Rizespor finished in the bottom half last season with 48 points, almost half of Besiktas’ tally of 84 and the focus will be on doing well this term. Besiktas managed a double actually, winning the cup after beating Antalyaspor 2-0 in their final game of last season. They however haven’t had a great preseason, winning just one of the three matches they played. Besiktas struggled defensively last season and from their preseason performance, this issue hasn’t been resolved, the team conceding four goals in the last two matches. They conceded 44 goals in the league last season, giving them the poorest defensive numbers in the top five, and going to this game they have three clean sheets in the last 10 matches. The champions have a good run at home, winning six and losing just two of the last 10.

Rizespor head into this game on a very poor run and most of it has been down to a porous defence. They have conceded two or more goals in nine of their last 10 matches. In fact, the only time they’ve kept a clean sheet in the last 10 matches was against Denizlispor. Rizespor have lost six of their last eight matches and in the last five, they have failed to score in three. In those five matches, they have scored seven goals, but conceded 15. They played Alanyaspor in their final preseason friendly game and lost 2-0, their third straight loss ahead of this game.
