by Geoffrey Ejiga | in Liga Portugal Predictions

The fate of this Liga Portugal might just boil down to the result of Porto’s trip to Benfica on Matchday 25. First-placed Porto are just four points ahead of Sporting CP, who are likely to beat Braga this weekend. If Benfica, who are still unbeaten all season, shave points off Porto here, then the league race will be blown wide open. Stick around for our best match prediction.

With As Águias (The Eagles) out of every other tournament, all attention turns to the league title for Mourinho’s men. They sit seven points behind Porto at the top, but a win here will drop that to just four points with 27 more to play for. And that will just be the agenda for Benfica, who enters with a four-game league winning streak and five straight wins at home.

Mourinho would likely have to tweak his game plan to avoid another draw like earlier in the season. Dragões (Dragons), meanwhile, already has its eyes set on the trophy after spending seven straight months at the top. Porto has won a staggering 21 of 24 games this season, winning 14 of its last 16 in the league. They've dominated everywhere they've played, boasting the best home and away record.

Benfica Lisbon - Porto: Form Analysis

Benfica may not have the first spot to show for it, but not losing after 24 league games is a feat that's only undermined by Porto and Sporting’s excellent performances.

The Eagles enter this game after having just beaten Gil Vicente in a crucial 2-1 away win. Benfica needed that win after just losing out to Real Madrid for a UCL RO16 spot.

In truth, Benfica’s form outside the league has been poor, as they've been knocked out of the other three tournaments.

The league is now their last chance at silverware this season.

Dragões, on the other hand, is in a dire position. They've had one of their best openings to a season in club history. However, they're also on the verge of losing out on their second domestic trophy after their first-leg defeat to Sporting CP in the Taça de Portugal.

They lost out to Vitoria in the quarterfinal of the Taca da Liga earlier this season. With fierce competition for the Europa League title, Porto might also have just one shot at silverware this season, making this game a must-win.

Benfica Lisbon & Porto Squad Analysis

On the injury front, Porto were dealt devestating news last month as leading goal scorer Samu Aghehowa (22 goals in 35 appearances) was ruled out for the rest of the season with an ACL injury. Filling in should be on-loan Nice striker Tarem Moffi, who was brought in during the January transfer window.

As for Benfica, they'll be without the creativity of Fredrik Aursnes and Georgiy Sudakov. The midfielders rank first and third in the team for chances created.

With the defensive performances from both Benfica and Porto this season, you already know their keepers are among the very best performers in the league. Diego Costa alone has led his team to 16 of the 17 clean sheets they've kept this season.

And while the defence has been putting in overtime, Costa is also preventing 2.47 goals per game (4th most).

As Águia’s Anatoliy Trubin is also not far behind, with the fourth-most clean sheets (11), and the 10th-most goals prevented per game (1.72).

But while the defence has been the star of the show for both teams, their success won't be possible without offensive masterclasses from some key players. Vangelis Pavlidis for Benfica is the second-highest goalscorer this season with 20 goals and 4 assists in just 24 games.

For The Dragons, the main man has arguably been defender Jakub Kiwior. He's Porto’s highest-rated player on SofaScore and the third highest-rated in the whole league.

Our Benfica Lisbon vs Porto Prediction

Unless there's early fireworks that demand a response, don't expect end-to-end action, or at least many goals from both sides. This is shaping up to be a controlled outing. Porto would love a win, but knows that allowing Benfica to pick up three points would be even more deadly in the final ten games.

And The Dragons have just the defensive solidity to keep The Eagles at bay. So, just like their 0-0 and 1-0 meetings this season, we expect another relatively low-scoring game. Hence, our Benfica Lisbon vs Porto prediction is less than 2.5 goals.

Benfica Lisbon vs Porto Alternative Predictions

Draw or Porto

Odds 1.66
With ten games to go, the league title is basically in Porto’s hands, and you can only expect them to do everything to win it. They have the incentive, but also the tools to pull it off. While Benfica has scored four goals more, The Dragons have conceded six goals fewer while keeping 17 clean sheets in 24 games. They've edged out As Águias in two of two meetings this season, and we think they can do a third.
