Benfica have had many glorious moments in European competition but that certainly wasn't the case last season in the Champions League. The Portuguese side lost all six of their group matches scoring just once and conceding 14 goals. They had to play two qualifying rounds this season and in the play-off round and were struggling when 2-1 down on aggregate in the second leg of their tie at PAOK but recovered well to win 5-2 on aggregate. Benfica have to face another Greek side in this group having been drawn to play AEK Athens and Dutch side Ajax. Before those games they have to take on Bayern Munich and have only won two of their last seven home games in this competition. Domestic form is good at present as they top the Portuguese Primeira League with three wins and a draw but this is a lot tougher.

Bayern Munich already lead the Bundesliga by two points after winning all three of their league games this season. The German team reached the semi-finals of the Champions League last season losing 4-3 on aggregate to eventual winners Real Madrid. They are in top form having won their last eight games and are unbeaten in their last five away Champions League games including a draw in Madrid. They will again be one of the favourites to win this competition and can get off to a good start with an away win.
