Last weekend was an important one for Ben Shelton . The American won his maiden grass court tournament and now hopes for more success in Germany. Third seeded Shelton takes on lucky loser Lorenzo Sonego in round one of the Halle Open and with him in such good form, our prediction is he'll win in straight sets.
Shelton leads Sonego 4-1 in previous meetings. The most recent of those saw Shelton win on the grass of Wimbledon last year where he went on to reach the quarter-finals. Sunday saw him beat Taylor Fritz to win the BOSS Open in Stuttgart. Earlier in the tournament he had a win over Jiri Lehecka.
Lorenzo Sonego wasn't expecting to be playing in the main draw of the Halle Open. He was beaten by Nikoloz Basilashvili in the final qualifying round but was then reinstated as a lucky loser. The loss in qualifying made it seven defeats in his last nine matches.
The Italian is 70th in the live rankings, 65 places below his opponent.
Sonego won five of his nine grass court matches last year. That defeat to Shelton was in the fourth round at Wimbledon, the second time he has reached that far. He has won one grass court tournament but that was seven years ago in Turkey.
