Two of the best teams in Europe at the moment face off in Budapest this Thursday – Bayern Munich, the European champions, and Sevilla, the Europa League winners. Bayern Munich head to the game straight from a massive 8-0 win over Schalke in their Bundesliga opener. Meanwhile, Sevilla’s opening game in La Liga was postponed and as such they haven’t played competitively since beating Inter Milan in the Europa League final. The German side has won each of the last 22 matches and has an unbeaten run of 31 matches. The last time Bayern lost in a competitive match was way back in December 2019, when they were beaten 2-1 by Borussia Monchengladbach. They had a fine run in the Champions League leading to their 1-0 win over PSG in the final and will be hoping to win their second Super Cup, after managing the first in 2013 against Chelsea. This is going to be their third appearance in the Super Cup, after losing 3-2 to Liverpool in 2001 then beating Chelsea in 2013 on penalties after a 2-2 draw. In seven of their last 10 matches, Bayern have scored three goals or more but they have conceded in five of the 10 matches.

Sevilla have not had a competitive fixture since beating Inter in August but they had a practice game against Levante, winning 3-2. The game further exposed their defensive frailties and this will be a key concern going to the game against high scoring Bayern. On the other hand, the Spaniards have scored in each of their last six matches. In their last 32 matches, Sevilla have failed to score in just three. One of the most successful teams in the Europa League, Sevilla will be making their sixth appearance in the Super Cup. From their earlier five, they have managed just one win – beating Barcelona 3-0 in 2006. This will be the second time they face a non Spanish side in the Super Cup, after their 3-1 loss to AC Milan in 2007. They fell 2-0 to Real Madrid in 2014, 5-4 to Barcelona in 2015 and 3-2 to Real Madrid in 2016. With the high scoring history of their Super Cup matches, we expect goals here.
