Bayern Munich and PSG are both top title contenders in their respective leagues, but had mixed fortunes ahead of their Champions League quarter final face off in Munich. Both faced their direct title challengers and while Bayern beat Leipzig to go seven points clear, PSG lost to Lille and dropped to second place, two points below Lille. As PSG head to Germany, they will be hoping to not only take a first leg advantage, but also avenge for the loss in the Champions League final last season. Bayern will be aware of that and the Parisians will find the Bavarians well prepared. Buoyed by their win over Leipzig, Bayern will be in high spirits for this game, having now registered seven straight wins and just one loss in their last 16 matches. They’ve been improving defensively as well; that win marked a second straight clean sheet for the team. The hosts are unbeaten at home in 35 matches and will go to this game on a very strong position and in the Champions league they’re unbeaten in 19 matches. This season, in the eight matches played in the competition, Bayern have scored two or more goals in seven and at home, they have eight straight wins in Champions League matches. In each of the eight matches, they’ve scored two or more. This match is however overshadowed by Robert Lewandowski’s absence with injury. Leon Goretzka scored the lone goal against Leipzig and he will be the man expected to lead as Lewandoski recovers. He has three goals in the last five matches and though his numbers don’t compare to Lewandowski’s, he can be an able deputy. Hansi Flick will also have a few fresh legs with Alphonso Davies having sat out the win over Leipzig on suspension.

PSG suffered a 1-0 loss to Lille in an ill-tempered game in Ligue 1 and will want to take on the Germans with clear heads. It hasn’t been easy for them in the recent past – they have one clean sheet and two wins in the last five matches. However, they have seven straight away wins and among them one against Barcelona. This is the form they’ll be hoping is replicated in Germany and they head here unbeaten in five matches in the Champions League. Their two losses in the eight Champions League games this season came at the group stage while they have just two clean sheets in the eight. They beat Barcelona 4-1 in their last away match in this competition and have now won five of their last six away matches in the competition. In their defensive returns, PSG will struggle a bit in Germany – both sides have scored in six of the Parisians’ last eight away matches in this competition. This is their fourth visit in Germany since the start of 2020; PSG have lost two and won one in the earlier three. Heading here, they’ll be without two defensive midfielders; Italian midfielder Marco Veratti who tested positive for Covid – 19 and the suspended Leandro Paredes. However, Neymar, who missed the two legs against Barcelona is back.
