After a summer in which Australia's cricketers have retained the Ashes against England, the rivalry goes to the Women's World Cup. England take on Australia on Wednesday August 16 for a place in the final against either Spain or Sweden. A win for England will mean the trophy is going to be won by a European nation for the first time since 2007. Neither of these countries have ever won the Women's World Cup but England are the European champions and as you'll read, they are also looking for revenge on the Matildas.Limited Offer. Australia W - England W: Form Analysis
England have won all their matches in this 2023 Women's World Cup with only one requiring extra time. Their performances haven't always been the best and that was the case when coming from behind to beat Colombia in the last eight. Only two goals have been conceded in their five games and one of those came from the penalty spot. England are ranked fourth in the world and that's six places higher than their opponents. Since Sarina Wiegman took over as coach in 2020, they have only lost one match. That was on home soil earlier this year when being beaten 2-0 by Australia. Since then, the Lionesses have played six games without defeat despite losing key players such as Beth Mead and Leah Williamson. This is their third consecutive Women's World Cup semi-final but the other two have both ended in defeat.
Australia are the co-hosts and bidding to become the first host to win the trophy since the USA in 1999. They are playing in their first semi-final after previously losing in the last eight three times. Of their five matches in this 2023 Women's World Cup, three have been won in 90 minutes, the quarter final won via a penalty shootout and they lost 3-2 to Nigeria. That's the Nigeria of course that England beat in the last 16. The Matildas haven't seen the best of their record goalscorer Sam Kerr. The Chelsea striker missed the first two games due to a calf injury and is yet to score in this competition. Australia have only one loss in their last seven matches. There have been under 2.5 goals scored in six of their last eight internationals.
