Australia W vs England W Prediction & Betting Tips - Womens World Cup

by Steve Ashfield | in Womens World Cup Prediction

After a summer in which Australia's cricketers have retained the Ashes against England, the rivalry goes to the Women's World Cup. England take on Australia on Wednesday August 16 for a place in the final against either Spain or Sweden. A win for England will mean the trophy is going to be won by a European nation for the first time since 2007. Neither of these countries have ever won the Women's World Cup but England are the European champions and as you'll read, they are also looking for revenge on the Matildas.

Australia W - England W: Form Analysis

England have won all their matches in this 2023 Women's World Cup with only one requiring extra time. Their performances haven't always been the best and that was the case when coming from behind to beat Colombia in the last eight. Only two goals have been conceded in their five games and one of those came from the penalty spot. England are ranked fourth in the world and that's six places higher than their opponents. Since Sarina Wiegman took over as coach in 2020, they have only lost one match. That was on home soil earlier this year when being beaten 2-0 by Australia. Since then, the Lionesses have played six games without defeat despite losing key players such as Beth Mead and Leah Williamson. This is their third consecutive Women's World Cup semi-final but the other two have both ended in defeat.

Australia are the co-hosts and bidding to become the first host to win the trophy since the USA in 1999. They are playing in their first semi-final after previously losing in the last eight three times. Of their five matches in this 2023 Women's World Cup, three have been won in 90 minutes, the quarter final won via a penalty shootout and they lost 3-2 to Nigeria. That's the Nigeria of course that England beat in the last 16. The Matildas haven't seen the best of their record goalscorer Sam Kerr. The Chelsea striker missed the first two games due to a calf injury and is yet to score in this competition. Australia have only one loss in their last seven matches. There have been under 2.5 goals scored in six of their last eight internationals.

Australia W & England W Squad Analysis

England will still be missing Lauren James for this match. James was sent off against Nigeria in the last 16 and initially given a one-match ban. That's subsequently been extended to two matches so she can't play in this game either. Ella Toone replaced James for the quarter final and is again expected to start the match. England have no other injury concerns. Sam Kerr didn't begin the match against France and still doesn't appear to be 100% fit. It's not known yet if she will start this semi-final against England.

Australia W - England W Key Points

  1. England are unbeaten in this Women's World Cup.
  2. Australia have already been beaten by Nigeria.
  3. Since that loss, Nigeria have gone on to be beaten by England.
  4. England have only conceded two goals so far, one from the penalty spot.
  5. England are ranked six players higher than their opponents.

Our Australia W vs England W Prediction

England will want revenge on Australia for that defeat inflicted on them earlier this year. Coach Sarina Wiegman is just beginning to realize the scale of the rivalry between England and Australia. Her team has been blowing a bit hot and cold in this tournament but the same can be said of Australia. England look stronger defensively and the lack of fitness of Sam Kerr remains a problem for Australia. Our  Australia women v England women  prediction is a win for England.
