Fortaleza have finally managed to rise off the bottom of the Brazilian Serie A standings and they will be looking to make another huge step up when they travel to Belo Horizonte to face Atlético Mineiro. The two sides are having different fortunes in the campaign so far, Atletico Mineiro going into this game placed fourth with 21 points while Fortaleza are 19th with 10 points. It has been a bit shaky for Palmeiras; their title defence isn’t going as expected. After 13 matches they find themselves seven points behind leaders Palmeiras and they have the most porous defence in the top four. They are the second best scorers in the league but this hasn’t been matched by their defending. At one point in their recent matches, they were handed a 5-3 beating by Fluminense, but they’ve improved since then, and are coming into this game unbeaten in four. They’ve scored two or more goals in three of the last five matches and have only failed to score once in that run.

Fortaleza have done well in their recent matches, but this is not the game they’d have wished for just when they got their footing in the Serie A after a difficult start. They have three straight losses in matches against Atletico Mineiro and in the last five meetings they’ve managed just one win. Two straight wins – against America Mineiro in the league and Ceara in the Brazilian Cup must have built their confidence. The fact that they go into this game with three clean sheets in four matches will further push them, though here they face a side that has been great in attack. In five away matches in Serie A, Fortaleza have suffered four losses, and though they have no clean sheet in these five, they’ve failed to score in just one.
