Arsenal were 1-0 up against the ten men of Atletico Madrid but instead of getting a possibly decisive second goal, they gave away an equalizer. Now they have to travel to Spain for the second leg knowing that they have to score to stay in the tie and keep alive their hopes of winning this trophy and qualifying for the Champions League. Arsenal really could have done with a first leg lead because their big problem at present is getting results on their travels. They did win at Milan in the last 16 but had to come from behind to get a draw at CSKA Moscow and were beaten by FC Koln in the group stages. In the Premier League they have lost their last six league games and travelling to Atletico Madrid is going to be their toughest task of the season.

That's because the home side are unbeaten in their last 12 league and cup games but that's only half the story. Atletico have kept a staggering 11 straight clean sheets at home, last conceding a goal on January 20 and away teams have only managed to score against them in two of the last 16 in all competitons. They haven't conceded a home goal in the Europa League this season and even Roma couldn't score here in the Champions League earlier in the season. Since 2014 they have only lost two of 26 home European games and have gone 19 home La Liga games without defeat and that includes visits by Real Madrid and Barcelona. The late away goal in the first leg has greatly increased their chances of making it through to the final and they can get a narrow home win to eliminate Arsenal.
