Aston Villa and Newcastle United both had losing starts to the Premier League, which they will be hoping to address going into the second week of matches. Villa fell 3-2 away to Watford while Newcastle were 4-2 losers at home to West Ham United. Hosts Villa responded to going down 3-0 in the Watford game but their comeback was a tad short and barred by time. Danny Ings scored a stoppage time penalty after John McGinn’s first in the 70th minute but Watford hung on to win 3-2. Villa no longer have their talisman, Jack Grealish but they still have the goals, having scored in four of their last five matches. In that run, they have scored two or more and they’ve ended with over 2.5 goals. The same is the case in their last four league matches – all have ended in over 2.5 goals and both teams have scored. Aston Villa are unbeaten in their last four meetings with Newcastle United.

Newcastle United twice led West Ham United in their opening game but the Hammers managed to come back and win 4-2. The Magpies can only hope for a better showing against Villa but they will need to improve defensively, having been badly exposed in their opening game, after a fine preseason. This was Newcastle United’s first loss in five matches; they have three wins in the run, and both sides have scored in three of the five. They have scored two or more goals in four and have added to their attack Joe Willock, who had a great run as a loanee from Arsenal. With Callum Wilson and Allan Saint Maximin also in, Newcastle are good in attack. They have a good run in away matches in the Premier League, unbeaten in the last four, and with three wins in there. They however have one clean sheet in the four matches, though they’ve scored two or more in three of them.
