Manchester City’s leadership in the Premier League has been cut to eight points but they will be hoping to reopen an 11-point gap when they travel to Aston Villa on Wednesday. Villa will be hoping to recover from a 2-1 loss to Liverpool, which left them 11th with 44 points while City have 74 points, at the league summit. Aston Villa are hoping to get a top half finish, but one win in the last six league matches doesn’t come close to matching that ambition. Their only win in six league games was against relegation threatened Fulham, and they have no clean sheet in their last four matches. Villa have managed just six wins in their 14 league matches this season, with the last six yielding two wins and three losses. Skipper Jack Grealish is still out injured and Villa are missing his creativity and general impact, having contributed to 16 goals this season. Ahead of this game Villa have managed more than a goal in just one of the last six home matches in the league but have conceded more than a goal in three of the six.

City have just been eliminated from the FA Cup and their quadruple chances are over, though they still are strong contenders for the remaining three titles. Pep Guardiola’s team is losing its defensive solidity as well, having conceded in each of the last four matches, but their attacking threat remains intact, with the team scoring twice in three of their last five matches. After matches in the Champions League and FA Cup, they return to league action here, looking to rise from their 2-1 loss to Leeds United in the last league game. City have nine straight away wins in the Premier League and are unbeaten in 10, while they’ve scored two or more goals in seven of the 10 away matches, and kept seven clean sheets. Against Aston Villa, they have seven straight wins, which they’ll be hoping to extend even though they may be without Kevin De Bruyne, who limped off in the FA Cup game. Sergio Aguero is also out with injury.
