Ashlyn Krueger and Wang Yafan, both unseeded, will meet in the first round at the Nottingham Open. The winner of this first encounter between these two will set up a second-round showdown with either Francesca Jones or Caroline Dolehide. Krueger is having an inconsistent year and will hope switching to grass comes with a season turnaround. The American has lost 15 times so far which is two more defeats than the 12 she has won. Krueger, who debuted on grass last season, is coming off a first-round loss at the French Open. Losing in the first round has been a common occurrence this year for the 20-year-old. Krueger, who hasn’t won more than two matches at a tour event this season, has lost eight times in the first round. She returns to Nottingham placed 67th in the live ranking.

Wang Yafan is marking her return to Nottingham after a two-year hiatus. The 30-year-old last participated in this event in 2021 where she suffered a loss in the first round. That was her debut in the main draw after two unsuccessful attempts losing in the qualifying rounds. Yafan is having a topsy-turvy season too but has performed a bit better than her opponent, Krueger. A semi-finalist in Hua Hin earlier in the season, Yafan has compiled a 13-12 record. She also produced a third-round finish at the Australian Open earlier inthe year to record her best-ever result at a major. The Chinese number six starts the week ranked 72nd in the WTA and is coming off a second-round exit at the French Open.
