A place in the third round of the Australian Open is up for grabs as unseeded Arthur Fils takes on 28th seed Tallon Griekspoor. Their opponent in round three will be either eighth seed Holger Rune or wild card Arthur Cazaux. If it's the latter then that would be an all-French clash if Fils can win this match. Fils is playing in his first ever Australian Open and has never made it past round two of one. He had a breakthrough year in 2023 winning a clay court tournament in Lyon and making the final of the European Open on a hard court which is the surface for this Grand Slam. Before this event. the 19-year-old made it to the last four of the ASB Classic in Auckland. That took him to a career high ranking of 34th. The first round of this Grand Slam saw him lose the first set against Jiri Vesely but win the next three. He's had one previous match against Griekspoor, beating him in five sets in last year's US Open

Tallon Griekspoor had to fight hard to get into this second round. He only won five games in the first two sets against Roman Safiullin but recovered to win the next three. That saw him avoid a third successive first round loss in a Grand Slam. His best ever performance in a Grand Slam was reaching the third round here last year. He was ranked 31st at the start of this hard court Grand Slam but is up two places in the live rankings but still below his career high of 21st. In the lead up to this tournament, Griekspoor represented the Netherlands in the United Cup but lost both of his matches in straight sets. We tip Fils to beat the seed and get to round three.
