Fourth seed Beatriz Haddad Maia will play the unseeded Anna Blinkova in the second round of this year’s Bad Homburg Open. This is the fourth career meeting between them and the victor will proceed to play Linda Noskova or Viktoriya Tomova in the quarter-finals.
Anna Blinkova has returned to Bad Homburg for a fourth time. She set her best result in last year’s edition by qualifying for the quarter-finals. The Russian began this year’s event with a straight-sets victory over the in-form Bianca Andreescu.
Andreescu was coming off a runner-up finish in Hertogenbosch. The victory should give Blinkova, who has been in poor form this year, confidence going into this match. Blinkova has compiled a disappointing 10-16 record and had lost three straight before arriving in Bad Homburg. She has now moved up one place to 65th in the live ranking.
Beatriz Haddad Maia is making her debut in Bad Homburg. She began things off with a 2-0 victory over lucky loser Tamara Korpatsch.
The first set of that showdown was smooth sailing as she allowed the German just one set. However, the second set was anything but smooth and required a tiebreaker. The Brazilian will however not lose any sleep by this and will be confident of prolonging her stay in this event.
Maia has dominated this fixture with Blinkova and has won all three of their matchups. They last faced off in the final of the Saint-Malo Challenger two seasons ago. Maia has had a rocky campaign and has compiled a 16-16 record and was on a three-match skid before arriving in Bad Homburg. Advancing to this round has moved her up one place to 19th in the live ranking.
