Angola will be looking to go top of Group E of the AFCON qualifiers when they play host to Madagascar. The two nations are six points apart, Angola in second spot and Madagascar bottom of the four-team group. Going into this game, Angola have eight points, trailing Ghana by a point, and they clearly need to improve defensively. A win here will secure them a slot at the competition. In their last action in July, Angola beat Lesotho 2-0 in the Cosafa Cup. They’ve lost just once in the last five matches – 1-0 against Mauritius. That was also the only time in five matches that they failed to score. Angola are however not the sharpest in attack, having only scored more than once in two of five games. They aren’t the best defensively either, coming into this game with two clean sheets in 10. Both sides have scored in four of their last five matches. In AFCON qualification, Angola have three wins in six matches.

Fortunately for Angola, their visitors aren’t great attackers either. The visitors are also already out of contention for a place at AFCON 2023. Madagascar have failed to score in four of their last five matches. Their last five matches have returned just a goal – in their 1-0 away win over Niger. In their last outing, Madagascar drew 0-0 with Ghana at home, in June. That result confirmed they will finish bottom of this group. Madagascar have actually failed to win in their last nine matches in AFCON qualification. They’ve lost five times in that period. Their last win in qualification was the 6-2 away win over Niger in 2019. That was also the last time they scored more than once in such qualifiers. They’ve been so poor lately that in the last seven qualification matches, they've scored just one goal. In their first meeting with Angola in this group, it ended 1-1.
