World number 38 Anastasia Potapova and world number 60 Katie Volynets will face off in the first round in Wuhan. This match marks a second meeting between the players and we have a peek at the stats and a prediction. 

Anastasia Potapova is debuting in Wuhan and comes seeking to end her two-match losing run. 

The Russian, who last won a match back in August, lost in her last two outings. She was defeated more recently in the second round in Beijing. 

Potapova has compiled a 25-21 record. She has recorded two semi-final finishes in Cleveland and Birmingham and also made it to the quarters at Indian Wells.   

Katie Volynets defeated Potapova via a decider in Austin last year. She came from a set down to win what was their first career meeting. As this match is also on a hard court, the American will be confident of making a winning start here. 

Volynets was also in Beijing, getting to the third round, to equal her best-ever result at a WTA 1000 tournament. Her performance in Beijing allowed her to take control of her form just a little bit. 

Volynets, who has won 46 matches so far, has struggled in recent weeks. Before taking part in the China Open, she had managed just two wins in seven matches. The 22-year-old has moved up five places in the live ranking and is now 55th. 

The winner from this meeting will play second seed Jessica Pegula next.
