The 23-37-3 Anaheim Ducks play the final game of five at home, taking on the 28-20-14 New York Islanders. They have alternated wins and losses in the first four, victorious against the New Jersey Devils and Ottawa Senators but falling to the Vancouver Canucks and Dallas Stars. When these teams clashed in December, they fought back from a 0-2 deficit to take the lead before power play and short-handed goals saw them fall late. Their lack of consistency has been an issue as well as being in the bottom five in the league in both goals scored and conceded. They have done better on the road than at home this season which has been far from ideal for the fans.
There were no moves made by the Islanders at the trade deadline, a move that shows their players the management has faith in them after winning five straight to lift themselves within two points of a playoff spot. They include a win at home over the Boston Bruins as well as on the road at the Detroit Red Wings and the Dallas Stars, all of which were quality efforts. A huge part of their success, this season has been the continued progression of Noah Dobson. Quinn Hughes and Cale Makar get all the headlines as the top defencemen in the league but Dobson is right on their tails with 64 points, including points in his last four games straight. Brock Nelson leads the team with 28 goals, closing in on his third 30+ season in a row, scoring three in the Isles' last four games.
