Second seeded Paula Badosa takes on qualifier Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the second round of the Rome Masters. The winner takes on either Layla Annie Fernandez or Daria Kasatkina in the third round. Badosa is the world number three but seeded second in the absence of Barbora Krejcikova. The Spaniard has won one tournament this year. That was in the first event she played with success in the Sydney Classic. The last 16 of the Australian Open was reached and since then two semi-finals. One was in Indian Wells (which she won last year) and the other on clay in Stuttgart. Badosa has won one clay court tournament on the WTA circuit with success in Belgrade last year. 2021 also saw her get to the quarter finals at Roland Garros.

Aliaksandra Sasnovich is the world number 50 but had to qualify for this tournament. That saw her needing to win two matches, which she did without losing a set. That took her into the main draw and in the first round, Sasnovich beat Veronika Kudermetova. Not the easiest of tasks and Sasnovich had to come from behind to get the win. Sasnovich also had a good start to the year, losing in the final of the Melbourne Summer Set 2 tournament to Amanda Anisimova. The quarter finals of the St Petersburg Ladies’ Trophy was reached and the last 16 in Miami. A slow start has been made to the clay court season though with losses in Charleston and Madrid before finally getting some wins in the qualifying rounds for this event. Only once have the two players met in the past. That was back in 2015 in the qualifying rounds for the US Open with Sasnovich winning in three sets. A lot has happened since then and Badosa can be backed to win this in straight sets.
