Tommy Paul has advanced to the fourth round at the French Open and will be up against Alexei Popyrin. These two get to meet for the fifth time, and the winner will secure a quarter-final berth to face Ben Shelton or Carlos Alcaraz. Here’s our preview and prediction for the match.

Popyrin’s rise after a difficult start to the year continued with a third-round win against Nuno Borges in three sets. That marked a third consecutive win in Paris without dropping a set.

Unlike his first two opponents, though, Borges pushed him to two tiebreakers. He is in the fourth round at Roland Garros for the first time ever.

Tommy Paul will be out to extinguish Popyrin’s rising flame. The world No. 9 will be seeking a fourth win over Popyrin but is disadvantaged by having played four more hours than his opponent.

That, and a shaky fitness level could seriously jeopardize Paul’s quest for a first quarter-final appearance at Roland Garros. He’s also in the fourth round for the first time at the French Open, after a five-set win over Karen Khachanov.

This season he has lost twice in the fourth round, both at the Masters level. He is facing an opponent who has been to the fourth round only twice this season and won both.
