Alexandra Eala is making her Hong Kong debut and arrives hoping to spark an end to her recent struggles. The Filipino player, who has alternated between the tour and challenger circuits, is on a four-match losing streak.

She was last in action in Guangzhou, where she suffered a seventh first-round exit of the campaign. The world number 51 has compiled a 39-25 record and was a finalist in Eastbourne.

Katie Boulter will hope returning to an event where she had such success last season will spark a strong run this week. The Brit, last year’s finalist here, has arrived for the tournament in shaky form.

She has lost five of her last nine matches, and this run has highlighted the sort of season she has had. Boulter hasn’t been able to progress past the quarter-finals of a tour event.

This form has threatened her stay in the WTA’s top 100. Currently placed 98th in the live ranking, Boulter was eliminated, as a qualifier, in the first round in Tokyo last time out.
