Alaves are fifth in La Liga and only seven points adrift of league leaders Barcelona. They are only two points behind the Champions League places and their high position in the table is mainly down to their unbeaten home record. They have won four out of seven this season but three have been drawn. Goals have been thin on the ground with nine goals scored and five conceded. Only one of their last five league games have been won and they were knocked out of the Copa del Rey by Girona. The only win has been against Huesca who are bottom of La Liga. They have won three of their last four home league games though.

It's been a tough season for Athletic Bilbao and they are in the relegation zone  A run of 13 league games without a win got them in deep trouble. They have made a recovery of late though with two 4-0 wins over Huesca in the Copa del Rey and finally a league win with victory over Girona with the only goal of the game coming via a 92nd minute penalty. That was their first league win since August 20 though eight league games have been drawn. Away from home they are still looking for a first win, having drawn four and lost three. However, the four draws all came in their first four away league games of the season and the last three have all been lost and they have conceded three goals in each of the last two.
