The 2016/17 season saw Ajax reach the final of the Europa League losing to Manchester United. Since then though they have failed to win a tie losing in the qualifying rounds of both the Champions League and Europa League. They finished in the Dutch league last season to qualify for the Champions League but need to play six games if they want to play in the group stages for the first time since the 2014-15 season. Recent form in the Champions League has been poor with just two wins in the last 15. Home form has seen them go four without a win but the last three have all ended in draws.
Sturm Graz are playing in the Champions League for the first time since the 2011/12 season but finished second in the Austrian Bundesliga last season despite losing seven away games.. They have only won two of their last ten games in the Champions League and have only won one tie in their last three Europa League campaigns. Their last 11 away games in the Champions League have produced just one win and that was 17 years ago. With poor away league form in their national league, this looks booked for Ajax to get their campaign off to a winning start.
