Manchester United could only finish sixth in the Premier League so unless they want another season in this competition, they have to win this final. That will put them in the Champions League, a tournament their opponents Ajax have already qualified for. United had a shaky start to their Europa League campaign with poor away performances at Feyenoord (who pipped Ajax for the Dutch title this season) and Fenebahce. Since then though they have been unbeaten in the ten Europa League games they have played this season on their way to this final. They have been resting their top players in recent games, Ajax didn't need to do this as the Dutch season ended on May 14th. Ajax finished second in the Dutch league and owe their appearance in this final to their home form. They won all seven of their games conceding just three goals. It was a different story on the road though with no wins in their last six and conceding eight goals in the last three. United know how important this game is to them and they can get the win against an Ajax side that aren't quite as powerful when playing away from home.
